Christian Courage in the Age of Disbelief
Take Heart: Christian Courage in the Age of Disbelief
By Matt Chandler & David Roark
The Good Book Company, 2018 (119 pages).
Christianity on the outer is a good thing for the work of the gospel. This short book puts up an alternative to converting, condemning, or consuming the culture around us. We must not cower in fear, but instead lean on Him who is far greater and stronger than we think. Courage comes from fixing your eyes on the Lord.
‘The Story We Live in’ (chapter 4) is a helpful exploration of God as a warrior, who always fights for the good of his people. Historically, he fought the Canaanites, then even fought against Israel before he came as He promised, as a human to destroy the enemy of sin. God’s ‘campaign of disarmament’ continues through his church as we proclaim his victory to the ends of the earth. The final stage awaits – the return of the Lord Jesus in glory, the triumphant warrior. This is the big story God includes you in through faith in Jesus.
Chandler is not on about a strategy but a posture, of courage to live holy lives, courage to seek what is good for the church and the world around us, and courage to speak the truth about God. There’s a great gospel focus to the final chapters, along with some very practical suggestions for living courageously by reaching out to people, showing hospitality, and making a move toward those who are ‘outside’ of our own sphere. The church on the margins needs to take heart in a ‘God-sized’ courage.
